What’s in a Name? The Meaning Behind "Antea Group"

January 4th, 2018

Learn about Antea Group and why our name is symbolic of our core values, mission and collective strength

In 1986, Antea Group opened our doors with the belief that doing the right thing environmentally and socially brings long-term business value and a competitive edge—both for our organization and our clients. Now more than three decades later, this belief is central to our mission and defines every aspect of our organization—even our name.

“As an international engineering and environmental consulting firm, we wanted our name to reflect our core values, mission, and collective strength,” says Alison Bryant, Corporate Marketing Manager.

So, what is the meaning behind ‘Antea Group’?

After much brainstorming and long discussions, one story in particular resonated with company leadership: the story of Greek mythological figure Antaeus. Alison says:

“Antaeus was the son of Poseidon, ruler of the sea, and Gaia, who is more frequently known as Mother Earth. He was known for his legendary strength, acquired by remaining in physical contact with the Earth.”

Much like Antaeus, we derive our strength as a company by keeping both feet firmly on the ground. Through our intricate understanding of the physical world, we are able to develop solutions that meet our client’s needs while also driving towards a sustainable future. With over 3,300 employees and over 100 offices worldwide, we serve clients from local municipalities all the way up to global firms. We work every day to reduce environmental footprints, to mitigate safety risks, to protect against engineering failures, to minimize social impacts.

Connecting with the communities where we live and work

By virtue of the work we do, we are committed to promoting the health, safety, and well-being of our planet and its inhabitants. Through charitable giving, volunteerism and pro-bono services, we seek to positively impact our global home and local neighborhoods.

Any Greek history buffs out there will remember that Antaeus was defeated when he lost his connection with the Earth, but we don’t foresee that happening here. We plan to stay grounded to our core mission, values, and strengths for another 30 years and beyond.
