Building a Strategic Roadmap for Effective Waste Management

Challenge

The client, a provider of workwear and textile services, sought Antea Group’s support in improving their non-hazardous waste management across all waste streams by improving data quality and availability, capitalizing on the embedded circularity of operations, and expanding initiatives to support environmental goals and realize cost savings.

The main strategic goal set was to increase the amount of waste diverted from landfill companywide.

Within Antea Group, practitioners from Sustainability Assessments and EHS Auditing & Compliance collaborated to build a comprehensive waste management roadmap that included risks, opportunities, initiatives, stakeholder engagement, goals, metrics, roles, responsibilities, best practices for training, policies, considerations, and procurement ideas for the client.

Solution

Antea Group provided the following services:

  • Peer benchmarking
  • Strategy workshops for future state visioning
  • A final strategy roadmap

The future state visioning included workshops with selected stakeholders to align on the desired level of maturity for each priority topic, one being waste. Kara Van Blarcum, Waste and Materials Management Subject Matter Expert was consulted for her expertise. By completing peer benchmarking and facilitating workshops for the client’s team, Antea Group was able to deliver a final strategy roadmap for their non-hazardous waste management.

Result

Antea Group successfully delivered a holistic waste management roadmap, delivering strategies categorized by management area with action items, dates to complete them by, assigned roles for accountability within the client’s team, and tangible measures of success. For example, stakeholder engagement is to be considered successful if updates on waste management strategy and progress are included in their Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility report.

In addition, Antea Group delivered an annual checklist with 19 tasks to be completed by the client’s team between 2024-2027 and onwards. Now that the client has clear, tangible goals to work towards, they are anticipating collaborating with Antea Group in the future to reach those goals. These changes will be reflected in the client’s upcoming CSR report.
