Establishing Environmental Baselines

Challenge

A major integrated oil company, intending to divest a portfolio of 68 retail petroleum facilities in the northwest United States, requested the services of Antea®Group to conduct Phase II Environmental Site Assessments in order to establish an environmental baseline prior to selling the assets. Among the project-specific challenges were a short performance timeframe, a newly implemented safety program that would affect work practices and facility locations spread across multiple states requiring the knowledge and application of multiple state regulatory agency environmental criteria.

Solution

A team of Antea Group geologists, environmental scientists and project managers assembled from nearby offices to refine site-specific scopes, develop and implement protocols for fieldwork, safety, stakeholder notifications, data transfer and reporting. Up to eight field teams worked concurrently to detect subsurface utilities and obstructions prior to drilling over 450 test borings totaling over 9,300 vertical feet using direct push probes along with hollow stem auger and select rotosonic drilling methods. Antea Group logged over 175 fieldwork days without incurring a safety incident. Antea Group’s project manager also worked through performance issues with the oil company’s selected laboratory service provider, leading to re-sampling at no added cost and maintaining high data quality standards.

Result

All fieldwork was completed within eight weeks and final reports were completed and delivered in electronic and hard copy format four weeks later. Based on the successes of this portfolio of work, Antea Group was then retained to perform similar work for a portfolio of 30 sites on the four major Hawaiian Islands, and a portfolio of 45 sites in the San Francisco Bay Area.
