Methane Quantification Assessments on Orphaned Oil and Gas Wells

Challenge

A Northeastern U.S. State Agency contracted with Antea Group to quantify methane emissions from orphaned oil and gas wells and to provide oversight and documentation of plug and abandonment activities of orphaned oil and gas wells.

Solution

Antea Group conducted methane detection and subsequent methane emission quantification pre and post-plugging and abandonment of orphaned oil and gas wells at over 60 locations throughout the state.

In addition, Antea Group supported the client with the following tasks:

  • providing well designs plugging plans
  • air monitoring and sensitive protection plans
  • contractor oversight and collaboration of quality assurance and quality control for successful project plugging completions
  • environmental impact oversight
  • tracking of project financials (burn rates)
  • landowner outreach and regulatory liaison

Result

Antea Group has completed methane quantification assessments and provided detailed documentation and quality control checks on plug and abandonment of orphan wells. The results of this project will allow the Department of Interior to reduce the US methane emission map and document that an open conduit has been properly plugged to eliminate potential adverse impacts to surrounding subsurface and surface receptors.
