The Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School in Minnesota faced a significant challenge with per-and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in its water supply. Routine sampling revealed the presence of four to eight PFAS compounds in the water from the school’s four on-site wells, which posed serious health risks to the approximately 250 students and 50 staff members. The contamination was most likely caused by the long-term use of PFAS-containing floor waxes and coatings, which entered the groundwater through repeated cleaning and disposal. This situation required immediate attention to ensure the safety and well-being of the school’s community.
Solution
Antea Group responded by providing pro bono support to the school, leveraging the expertise of Bob Karls, President at Antea Group and hydrogeology expert. Bob Karls played a pivotal role in evaluating and assessing various water treatment solutions and potential new water sources. His approach took into consideration capital and maintenance costs, environmental impact, and the concerns of the school’s community. Utilizing insights from test wells and previous drilling, Antea Group identified a deep aquifer approximately 300 feet deep as a viable clean water source. Antea Group also supported the engineering work needed to connect new supply wells to the school’s system, ensuring that the school would have a reliable source of safe drinking water moving forward. Additionally, guidance was provided for the proper decommissioning of the old contaminated wells, and plans were put in place to monitor both shallow and nearby wells to prevent future exposure to contaminated groundwater.
Result
Through this collaborative effort with the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and state agencies, significant progress has been made. Over $2 million in funding has been secured to support the next phase of the project, which includes critical engineering work for the new wells. The identification of the deep aquifer as a clean water source has paved the way for further action, and engineering work is now underway to connect the new supply wells to the school’s water system. Once completed, the new system will provide safe drinking water to the school’s community, ultimately benefiting 250 students and 50 staff members. This project is a clear example of Antea Group’s commitment to environmental stewardship and protecting the health of vulnerable communities, contributing to a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable world.
