EHS Compliance: Data Center Construction

Challenge

Antea Group was retained by large data center operators to act as the Client’s representative to ensure that construction activities related to new data center builds complied with applicable environmental, health, and safety (EHS) regulations in addition to contractual obligations and industry best practices. The embedded Antea Group resources worked closely with general contractors, subcontractors, and other relevant stakeholders to accomplish these goals.

Solution

Antea Group provided resources with strong construction management backgrounds to be embedded on-site for the duration of data center construction. These resources oversaw health and safety compliance, risk management and incident prevention, stakeholder coordination and communication, and incident response and investigation, in addition to providing relevant training and continuous process improvements.

The Antea Group resources conducted regular health and safety audits and inspections to ensure compliance with applicable regulations such as personal protective equipment use, trenching and excavation, working at height, electrical safety, tool use, confined space entry, and heavy equipment use. Additionally, the inspections and audits were utilized to identify potential hazards where the Antea Group resources could implement work changes, corrective measures, and preventative measures to mitigate the identified risks. In some of the datacenter construction projects, the Antea Group resources were involved in safety in design considerations of the new data centers.

In the event of incidents, identified near misses, or observed safety violations at the jobsite, the Antea Group resources would either lead or assist in investigations, root cause analyses, and recommendation and implementation of corrective actions. Following an incident, the Antea Group resources would lead or participate in safety stand-downs to reinforce site safety requirements. They would also lead or assist in emergency preparedness activities such as preparing a site emergency action plan, providing first aid responders, and implementing fire safety procedures.

Result

Over the course of four years, Antea Group oversaw seven data center construction projects for the Clients. During these projects, Antea Group acted as a liaison between the Clients, general contractors, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies regarding EHS  matters. They generated regular safety performance reports for project leadership, highlighting performance metrics, incidents, and corrective action implementation to ensure overall EHS compliance.
