About Me In 140 Characters:
I’ve traveled throughout the US and internationally, for both business and pleasure. My career has been challenging at times but always rewarding. In my spare time, I enjoy music, tennis, golfing, poker, college football, and spending time with my family.
What is the most interesting project you’ve ever worked on?
I had a chance to evaluate the effectiveness of some unique personal protective equipment (PPE) for use with chemical warfare agents (CWAs) for a large government client that manages the U.S.'s stockpile of chemical weapons. They were considering a new class of PPE ensembles for use against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) hazards for their chemical demobilization personnel that were handling highly toxic nerve and blister agents, which were being destroyed onsite at several chemical munitions depots. I made a presentation on this project at the American Industrial Hygiene Conference in Toronto.
What are some of your favorite tools/resources for professional development in this practice area?
The websites for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and OSHA are very good. I would also say the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) website is very useful. In addition, AIHA also sponsors conferences and other educational forums. Participating in professional associations like AIHA (and ASSE) provides great networking and business development opportunities for health and safety practitioners.
What area(s) of H&S are you most interested in? Why?
The two areas that interest me the most are industrial hygiene (IH) and health and safety auditing. I’m a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and a senior-level Health and Safety practitioner. The reason I enjoy IH work is because it’s analytical and interesting: I like to learn how different things are made. EHS auditors act like detectives to figure things out and put them in the proper perspective so that you know and understand what’s the significance of all the details are that you are dealing with. It’s like solving a jigsaw puzzle. Trying to assess, manage, and communicate the significance of risks and compliance issues effectively can be a challenge.
I also enjoy training and mentoring young H&S professionals, which is very rewarding.
